John S. Rick, Managing General Partner

John is the partner in charge of accounting, auditing, and technology services for our firm. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the state of California. After graduating with a major in accounting from the University of Wisconsin, he received his MBA from San Jose State University with an elective specialization in tax.

The Association for Investment Management and Research (AIMR) has awarded the internationally recognized Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter to John.  The designation, recognized as a hallmark of excellence, demonstrates a balanced approach to investments, academic achievement, and practical experience that is unique in the investment industry.

 In addition to being a diplomat for the American Board of Forensic Accounting, John is also a Certified Fraud Examiner.



              Douglas Nichols, General Partner

Doug is the partner in charge of the San Jose office.  He brings to the table over 25 years of business experience and has been with Nichols, Rick & Company since its inception.

Doug received his Masters of Business Administration from San José State University in June 1988 (GO SPARTANS!) and his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, with a joint concentration in accounting and finance, from UC Berkeley in June 1981 (GO BEARS!).

 In addition to providing tax and audit services to clients, Doug assists them with tax planning, helps establish accounting systems and controls, and provides pension plan advice and administration.

Prior to becoming a partner with Nichols, Rick & Company, Doug worked as a CPA in a regional CPA firm, was a Controller with a Northern California property management and development company, and was the CFO of a start-up company.

Doug is a member of the AICPA, the California Society of CPA’s, the University of California, Berkeley Alumni Association, and the United Way of Silicon Valley’s emergency loan committee.  He has also earned the Certified Retirement Plan Specialist designation.

Doug resides in San Jose with his lovely wife and their two children, and enjoys skiing, camping, vacationing, backpacking, and tinkering with his 1982 Fiat Spider.
